Updates in Stroke Care

Description:

This course will address updates in acute stroke and secondary preventative management in an interactive format, giving the neurologist/healthcare practitioner practical knowledge that can be implemented into practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to apply recent updates in the management of acute hemorrhagic stroke into his/her practice, including the management of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe evolving indications for thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke, including late-window presenations, and the use of TNK, among others.
  • Upon completion, the participant will able to describe evolving indications for endovascular therapy in acute ischemic stroke, including thrombolysis bridging, the utility of advanced imaging, medium vessel occlusions, among others.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to discuss practical approaches and management of carotid disease, including asymptomatic carotid disease, the specturm of symptomatic non-stenotic carotid disease, and symptomatic carotid disease.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to utilize different antithrombotic strategies depending on the underlying stroke mechanism, timing, and additional risk factors, including the use of dual antiplatelet therapy, the role of ticagrelor in stroke prevention, and dual-pathway inhibition with an antiplatelet and low-dose anticoagulant, among others.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe common post-stroke complications, how to screen for them, and how initiate management in an outpatient setting.
