Description:

This course will address advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with epilepsy. This will include genetic testing, early and late post-traumatic seizures, the role of cannabis in medical management, and minimally invasive surgical options.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify which epilepsy phenotypes may be genetic, when to investigate for genetic epilepsy, and which testing to request.
  • Learn how to interpret genetic testing results, including variants of unknown/uncertain significance
  • Appreciate the perspective of patients and families seeking medical cannabis for the treatment of epilepsy and consider the practice of medical cannabis utilizing a harm reduction approach.
  • Appreciate the benefits and limitations of treatment of early post-traumatic seizures and describe candidate biomarkers for post-traumatic epileptogenesis.
  • Describe emerging minimally invasive therapies for epilepsy.
  • Evaluate the relative benefits, drawbacks and gaps in knowledge surrounding minimally invasive therapies for epilepsy.
