Luanne Metz, MD, FRCPC, FCAHS is a Neurologist and Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. She completed her MD in Calgary in 1983 and her residency in Toronto and Calgary in 1988. She was a founder, and first President of the Canadian Network of MS Clinics. She co-leads the MS program of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. She led the Calgary MS Clinic from 1992-2014 and the Calgary Division of Neurology and the Neurology Academic Medicine Health services Plan from 2014 to 2019. While Section Head of Neurology she collaborated with primary care to reduce the wait time for routine neurology consults from 21 months to 4 months. She was an academic representative to the Alberta Medical Association for several years. From March–June 2020 she was Associate Medical Director of Foothills Medical Centre to help prepare and oversee the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a clinician investigator Dr Metz built a world-renowned bench-to-bedside translational research program in the field of multiple sclerosis at the University of Calgary. She has published over 240 peer reviewed manuscripts and led the Calgary site in over 50 clinical trials. She designed and led the only non-industry funded phase III trial in MS to date (NEJM 2018). She received the Faculty of Medicine Watanabe Distinguished Achievement Award for overall excellence (1999), a Calgary YMCA Woman of Distinction Award (2001), was one of the Top 40 Alumni for the University of Calgary’s 40th Anniversary Celebration (2006), received the Alberta Medical Association Medal for Distinguished Service (2015), and was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2020). Dr Metz is now transitioning from her medical career to politics to bring experience and knowledge of the health system and postgraduate education to decision makers; she is a candidate for the Alberta NDP for the next Alberta provincial election (presumably May 2023).
